DIY Halloween Witch Hat

This year I’m doing what the hurricanes of last year didn’t allow: I’m going to Witches’ Night Out! I wasn’t really sure what to expect outside of some women wearing fun costumes, but it was a lot of fun! But let’s be honest, the star of the show was my custom DIY Halloween witch hat. Here's how I made it, and I hope it can inspire you to try out your own DIY project!

First I picked my theme: storm witch!

touching a gossamer bow on a black witch hat

This is a theme I’ve been trying to execute for over a year now, and I feel like I just haven’t been successful with it yet.

The idea was to have a gossamer ribbon around the top of the hat, raindrops dangling from the brim (evoking clouds), lightning and rainbow makeup, lightning earrings, and rainbow jewelry.

It’s a vibe.

I took a simple black witches’ hat and found this gorgeous gossamer fabric. Here’s where I went wrong. (I know, like, immediately haha). This fabric frays like crazy.

If you decide to add your own pretty little bow like I did, I fully recommend you buy a pre-made ribbon. Because I ended up having to use a lighter to burn the edges of the entire piece of fabric.

It took forever.

Maybe I could have just used some Modpodge along the edges, but that might have just made it messier. I’m not sure. Anyway, just buy some ribbon.

I wrapped it prettily around the hat and tied a nice little bow. Then I went in with some hot glue to pin it in place.

Make sure to try on the hat with the ribbon to make sure you glue it down with enough room to fit around your head.

I got this cute raindrop garland to add the rain underneath the hat.

Then comes the hard part.

I didn’t trust using hot glue to hold the raindrops in place, so I painstakingly sewed each one into place with black embroidery thread.

The strands of rain kind of stuck out weird in spots, so I had to shape them a bit and added these sparkling crystals to weigh down the loops a little bit.

These cute little crystal stars and beads added some cute sparkle!

I added some stars to the outside of the ribbon, ironed down the lace edges to make them flat, and added a star to the tip of the hat.

Voila! A cute little witch hat!

I'll admit it still didn't scratch that itch for my storm theme. It was really cute, but, as always, it needed more. It looked adorable on my girl, and I learned a lot. I had no idea what to expect from the event. Usually I find myself overdressed, but the hats at Witches' Night Out were AMAZING. But now I know what to expect next year haha.

Let me know if this inspired you to create your own unique witch hat! You can do this with any theme, some dreams, some hot glue, and maybe needle and thread if you need it.

Happy Halloween!
